Question: can I assume that the SDR Console won't recognize the hardware mute found on the 9 pin connector? My hunch is that you need to use the Elad SW2 software to access this hardware mute feature. Am I correct?

I bet you are correct. If you want that feature you MAY be stuck using Elad's SDR software. It is not a usual feature.
