Need some advice..

#1

Unread post by Mag loop Simon »

I am struggling to get used to just using pc and sdr for my amateur radio needs.
I still much rather use the yaesu ftdx1200.. at my location with my antennas it performs as good as the hl2 and elad duo..better tx than both the sdr’s.
I like the tactile feel of the yaesu..

But I do really like the display functions of the sdr’s..very useful!!

So..To get best of both worlds..
I am thinking of selling either the hl2 or elad ( NOT both) and the yaesu 1200..
Buying a yaesu ftdx3000 ( better rx than 1200 plus has rx and if out etc,) and hooking up to sdr via suitable software to make sdr and yaesu run as one..

What to sell?? Hl2 or elad..on paper the elad is best by a long way..but here..no difference really..
I can sit either in between 2 very strong stations, and as long as not listening in there tx bandwidth or imd’s can not tell they are there..sn ratio same.
Sensitivity same.
Infact the hl2 has 2 very useful controls on rx..rf gain and visual gain..with these one can set noise floor where you want..making it a very nice rx to listen too and weed out the dx..

What to sell??

Thanks Mag loop Simon

Ps Wife says one GOES!! Or no beer no more toys no more se@ lol..so one goes..

let me try to give an example of difference between hl2 and elad

screenshots are of the elad with 10db attenuator in..(no 4.)
rest are of the hl2 with different visual gain settings..NOTE the visual gain setting effects the audio...less visual gain less background noise, but also less indicated stregth of station being listened too..but that does not matter..sn ratio does!..and if the white noise in my ears is low then my brain can pick out the station much easier..hopefully that makes sense?

now if i can make the elad duo do the same as the hl2 then i will keep the elad..but i have no idea how to..there is no visual gain control for the elad..

ANY INPUT ON HOW TO do this would help me decide which sdr to keep..thank you
