I have a ‘main’ identity and 1 other. While in either, is it possible to switch to the other without shutting down and reopening the software ?

It depends if you're intending to run the same radio on the "other" identity. If not, and you run diffewrent radios on the two identities, then you can run them concurrently.

If you want to run the same radio on the 2nd identity, then the only way is to close the first one and start the 2nd, then run the radio.
Alternatively.. you can stop the radio on the first identity, leave the identity open, fire up the 2nd identity and run the radio from there. So you can leave both identies open and start/stop/use the radio on one or the other.

I have a different radio on each identity. So if I 'stop' the current identity with radio 1, I can't see how to then "fire up the 2nd identity" with radio 2 ? Sorry if I'm being a bit dumb !

Or do you mean just start a 2nd instance of the software and choose the 2nd identity...?

Steve you need to start a 2nd instance then pick the 2nd identity.
You don't need to stop or shut down the 1st instance.
