IQ-recording window starts slowly at high load

#1

Unread post by sm6fhz »

Hi Simon.
The starting time of the IQ-recording window is slow at high loads as mentioned in another posting. I will describe what I see in more detail here.
PC is Core i7 950 with a MSI Gforce GTX 1050Ti video card. SDRC is 3.0.26 2020-12-05_1856. Radio is AFEDRI Net via SDRserver over a 100/100 Mbit/s WAN.

BW CPU load GPU load Starting time
500 kHz 13.5% 5.0% ~5 sec
666 kHz 18% 5.8% ~3 sec
800 kHz 20% 6.8% ~60 sec
1000 kHz 24% 6.3% ~3 min
1333 kHz 28% 7.3% ~10 min

Pressing the "About version 3" button under the Help tab the pop-up window takes about a minute to appear when running at 1333 kHz BW as well.
It looks very load induced to me.

Can I set some kind of priority to speed up the appearance of the Recording window?

The GPU Diagnostics says "Pwr. save". Can I change such a setting somewhere? I have not yet found a control device for the new video card (<24 h old in the PC).
I would of cause like to be able to instantly start an IQ-recording of the full band when I find that the MW-conds are good and being close to TOH. :-)

I attach some hopefully relevant and useful screenshots.

OK,

The main thread is running flat out so the idle loop is not getting a look-in. Must take a break, will think about this, it's nothing to do with priority.

OK Simon.
I forgot to mention that I am running 20 receivers active in a matrix.
I have tried to configure the MSI Gforce GTX 1050Ti card for maximum performance but SDRC still says "Pwr save" mode in the GPU monitor window.
Any idea on how to exit Pwr save mode and activate Maximum Performance mode?
I would expect the CUDA GPU to carry more of the load when using so many active receivers. Can I get the GPU to carry more of the load?

Hi,

1) Please show me the Pwr save message.
2) You are really at the maximum I am afraid, the main thread of SRC Console is overloaded, that's why you're waiting so long to see changes on the main waterfall.
3) What's it like with only 10 receivers?

Also,

I'm amazed that you can run 20 RX on this system.

The Pwr save message is in the screenshots (the lower one, "GPU monitor") in the start posting in this thread.
I can not find any more knobs to turn nor any more switches to flip in the Nvidia Control Panel in order to get the system understand that the Pwr save mode is no no. I have searched the Internet for advice and checked the ones I found.
OK, I hoped that the GPU would free up some CPU resources to make it work decent :-) The CPU is slightly overclocked (12 GB of RAM as well) and has been used for EM-simulations before I built my 6 core system.
I will try with less receivers.

OK,

GPU-Z is good for monitoring the PC, as I said running 20 RX is quite amazing but unless I do some 'adventurous' programming you'll have to live with what you have. 20 RX is amazing for this system.

FWIW I'm going to attempt multi-threading in the DirectX UI today - if it works without exploding I'll make you a kit.

GM Simon.
I got the GPU-Z and installed. All looks OK and no signs that the Geforce GTX 1050Ti would not work as expected. Nice piece of S/W. Still the SDRC GPU Monitor window says "Pwr save" :?: Screenshot attached.
Let me know if / when you have an update and I will try it out. Would "Multi threading" use the number of GPU CUDA cores in an more efficient way or is it for the CPU cores?

Ingolf,

Again - you are really at the very maximum performance for your computer. If I get Direct2D multithreading working it will reduce the load on the main thread.

Long term you may have to consider a new computer.
