SO2R

SO2R implementation with SDR Console:

- two Identities for two independent SDRs such as two ANAN or Hermes Lite etc. as Radio 1 and Radio 2.
- SDR Console would connect the serial port of virtual serial cable back to logging program (N1MM etc.) - similar to CAT commands
- N1MM send ASCII commands back to SDRC to change the RX and TX focus. RX focus is switching the headphones to Identity 1, Identity 2 or Stereo. The TX focus switches the microphone between Identity 1 and Identity 2. It would be helpful to have as well a digital output (for example DTR or RTS of physical COM port) with TX focus sign for external switching of CW/PTT lines between Radios.

There are two common SO2R protocols, OPTRS and MK2, supported by contest logging programs. They are quite similar. Here is list of the focus commands:

OTPRS [MK2]
RX1 [FR1] – listen to radio 1
RX2 [FR2] – listen to radio 2
RX1S [FRS] – listen Stereo or on Radio 1 if stereo not available
RX2S [FRS] – listen Stereo or on Radio 2 if stereo not available
TX1 [FT1] – microphone to radio 1
TX2 [FT2] – microphone to radio 2

I’ve used two SDR running two instances of PowerSDR and an external SO2R relay switching box but it was not very neat – especially for remote operation with a remote desktop. SmartSDR from Flex support SO2R. Flex looks very nice but nightmare to use. Terrible audio delays and the 6600 hangs and resets itself at will. Many of us spent bit of money on Flex radio just because of SO2R feature. Very frustrating.

Let’s hope that Simon might look into this. He always find nice ways how to do things :)
