Unless it has been infected in the last gawd I don't remember how long it's clean.

It does not do anything TO winusb.sys. It simply informs the OS that the dongle uses software that speaks to the dongle through Microsoft's "winusb.sys" file. Basically all Zadig does is generate a .inf file in the appropriate place and tickle he OS to use the .inf file to install the dongle and not some other file.

If you were able to find the dongle with SDRC to create a definition for it then it's installed correctly. If I recall correctly SDRC's default gain is the lowest gain for the dongle. Run the gain up to about the 19 dB level. Signals should start peaking out of the noise. Take a 19" long chunk of wire to the base of your stubby antenna. That will also bring up signal levels. BTW - set the sample rate to 2.4 Msps and leave it there for the best dynamic range the poor little thing can give. If you get things working and want to get serious visit "AirSpy.com" and get one of Youssef's "AirSpy R2" units for VHF and up and/or one of his "AirSpy HF+ Discovery" units for a really hot HF receiver. "He done good" with those designs in terms of bang for buck. That's my arrogant opinion. (At 79 I am entitled to be arrogant?)

Be SURE to read the SDR-Radio (V3) documentation on SDR-Radio.com if you have not found it. (Dig into the menus.)

(I have - gee, I've lost count - at least 6 of those rtlsdr buggers and wrote my own rtlsdr.dll substitute for jollies. Don't like 'em anymore. I've opted for fancier toys. Wish I was in Europe to play with ham satcom on a grand scale.)

And PLEASE PLEASE give the people around here time to come around and read new messages. We're not always present. (I'm insomniac and am about to head to bed. I checked here on a whim.) Checkout the groups.io mailing list, too. There may be more people there depending on time of day. And consider European hours. That is where Simon lives.
