Error Creating Omni Rig Instance

#1

Unread post by Mikeusnret »

I have Omni-Rig v2.0 installed and running and am able to connect to SDRUno just fine and control my radio (FT-991A). I have installed SDR Console (v3.3) and even the Beta (3.4) and am unable to connect to my external radio because it constantly thinks Omni-rig is not installed or running.

I have completely uninstalled Omni-Rig and SDR Console, rebooted and reinstalled both Omni-Rig and SDR Console and it will connect just fine however, if I exit from SDR Console and later try to re-run it, I get the Error Creating Omni Rig Instance yet again and the ONLY way to get it working is to do a complete uninstall of both and reinstallation. Who the heck has time to do that each time??? SDRUno still connects via omni-rig to the radio just fine. I have been doing online research and see that this has been an ongoing issue since like 2018. Certainly there has to be a simple fix by now for this so repeated use / success.

My Enhanced Comport on my PC is COM11 and baudrate set to 38400 to match the baud rate setting in the radio. The baudrate and com port are set correctly to match in Omni-Rig including data, stop, and parity bits. Has to be otherwise SDRUno wouldn't work :)

Help Help Help. Need a solution. Thanks

Hello Mike. Simon has stated a few times on here that SDRC is not compatible with Omnirig 2.0, which anyway (as far as I know) is an unofficial modification of Omnirig.

You need to use the official version of Omnirig which currently stands at 1.20:

https://www.dxatlas.com/omnirig/

Message from HB9RYZ on his website for Omnirig 2.1:

"Important to know - The new OmniRig v2.1 is not compatible with the famous OmniRig v1.19/v1.20 from Alex! The new OmniRig v2.1 works only with programs that have been developed for it, e.g. Swisslog v5.99e (Dec. 2019) and HDSDR v2.80 (March 2020) or v2.81 Beta6 (June 2022). OmniRig v2.1 does not work with JTDX, WSJTX or other applications."

Ah, OK. Then this may be the answer to the issue...... start Omnirig first and only after that start SDRC. I believe it's a well documented issue for some people:

See here:

Hope it works for you.

Have been through all of that. Tried changing the baud rate to something slower. no change, Have turned on PC, run Client and Omnirig, then turned on radio and see that it is connected to Omni Rig. Last have run SDRC and tried to connect only to get the same failure as before: Error creating Omni Rig Instance. I have even run SDRC as administrator and that doesn't work. I downloaded and setup up Log4OM as that also uses Omni Rig and it connects just fine as does SDRUno so there is definitely a bug with SDRC in being able to connect to the enhanced comm port / Omni Rig Not being a programmer, not sure how all this works. I wonder if there is a registry setting that needs to be changed????? During my search in forums etc on the internet, I see that this has been an ongoing issue since as far back as 2018. Some have said they found a fix, but then never share what that fix is. This is a great piece of software and I love the interface, but it is not worth the time it takes to uninstall everything, reboot, and then reinstall just to hope it works each time <sigh>

Here is the logfile it creates:

Mike, I am very far from being any kind of knowledgeable person on this issue, but I do seem to recall after a long time across the SDR Console Groups that FT-991 comes up more often than other rigs when it comes to Omnirig issues. I also recall there being a modified Omnirig rig .ini file helping in some of these cases.

Have a look at this thread. No harm in downloading and replacing the the FT-991.ini rig file in Omnirig with the one that's posted for download at the end of this thread as the users report success with SDR Console and their FT-991. Worth trying at least surely.

https://groups.io/g/FT-991A/topic/68294173#msg224

Another thing I wonder...... in SDR Console External Radio settings, have you got the tick box on the Omnirig tab "Start when console starts" unticked? It occurred to me that if it is ticked, Console is trying to start another instance of Omnirig when there is one already running?

Well, No luck with the .ini files from that thread you linked. Still won't connect to Omni Rig and no, the start box is not checked. I even tried to ressign my silicon labs standard and enhance comm ports from 10 and 11 to 3 and 4 and still no luck. Oh well. Time to give up and move on. Thanks Max. I'll re-visit this at a later date and see if there is any fix that comes around.

That's a pity Mike as I feel sure there are others on here who are using the FT-991 successfully and certainly many people use other external rigs with Omnirig with no issues so I feel it must be crackable somehow. Frustrating. Hope it can be sorted at some point one way or another.
