Pray for an RX-999 with provision for an external power supply. Meanwhile use leads that are built for high current draw. They are fat, unwieldy, but have a chance of working.

It may not be the problem of power supply. It is more likely to be the problem of USB3.0 signal transmission. USB3.0 cannot be transmitted over long distances.

This is true. However, I am seeing some issues with the power supply. If nothing else an external power supply with better filtering than the average computer features on the USB3 bus might be good for phase noise. (It looks like a nice tool. It's not what I am looking for at the time so I did not purchase one. And an Rafael R820 series tuner on such a magnificent machine? Eeewwwww!)

(Heh, what I really need are more productive hours in a day. {^_-})

I bought a Tripp Lite 6 ft. USB 3.0 extension cable for mine, part # U324-006. Works fine.
