Any chance to get a free or discounted licence for the Ukrainian military?

#1

Unread post by Maksym Kozub »

I have been in the Ukrainian Armed Forces since May 2022; I joined the ranks voluntarily, to defend my country against the Russian invasion. (I did the same in 2014, was seriously wounded in August 2014, etc.) I have been doing some radio monitoring using RSPdx and other hardware and various software applications. I tried SDR Console (v3), and it seems great for some of my tasks. Sometimes there are things the government cannot quickly fund to the full extent from the public budget, and we raise donations etc. In this situation, I am wondering whether Simon would consider supporting me and my colleagues by providing a free licence, or at least some discount, for SDR Console. We would greatly appreciate it.
If we do not get such support, then I will definitely pay the full amount for the licence. On the other hand, if we get a free or discounted licence (or maybe even several licences?..), then I will personally do as much as I can to publicise it.
(I have not found Simon's e-mail address, otherwise I would just write to him personally.)

Maksym,

There is no licensing fee for the use of SDR Console. Just download and use.

Mike, thank you for your reply, and I am sorry if I have not been clear enough. https://www.sdr-radio.com/legal says:
HOBBY
This software is available free of charge for hobby users such as radio amateurs and shortwave enthusiasts. (The development is funded by donations and commercial licences.)

EDUCATION
This software is available free of charge for use in schools, colleges, training facilities.

COMMERCIAL
As of April 1st, 2020 world-wide commercial licencing uses honour-ware:

No legal requirement to purchase a licence,
You are honour-bound to pay for the licences using PayPal , just keep your PayPal receipt,
Price per licence (per seat) is $125.
While we in the army are not doing any commerce, our use is not for hobby purposes either, nor are we a school or a training facility. The above terms say nothing about use by governmental institutions, military units, etc., but I know that some software developers would treat any such use as "commercial", so I decided to ask directly whether Simon would agree to release us from that "honour-bound" payment obligation.

I sent Simon a heads up. Now, my personal take on this is that fighting a in war is a continuous learning experience, for the good guys, and a pointless slaughter for the bad guys. Fortunately in this war the good guys are smart and athletic and the bad guys rather stupid and arthritic. I'd allow Ukraine access on the basis of the "learning experience" sophistry. But that's just me, an 80 year old woman sitting in California speaking, not Simon.

{^_^} PS: I am REALLY glad we're on your side. I'd hate to have you guys as an enemy. You think. The Russians - God only knows what they do but it's not thinking.

Might I suggest being nice and tossing some dog treat money to Simon's paypal account as a good will gesture. Your good will gestures in the Kursk region will very probably bring good back to Ukraine in the future. Being nice to people is win win when you can.

Slava Ukraini!

I definitely agree, and I always try to help good people. I will try and think of how much I can send Simon right now. I am in a really tight financial situation, and even my near ones, who depend on me financially, get some minimum support from me at the moment, but I will definitely try to help as much as I can afford.
